This week, I'm blogging about problem based learning and web quests (which is an online form of problem based learning!) Problem based learning is based on a constructivist philosophy, which means that students are responsible for their own learning and finding solutions to authentic problems. My blog buddy, Kyle Miller, and I created the video below that explains problem based learning and web quests in depth:
(we made the video using http://www.screencast-o-matic.com- it was simple and fast to use!)
In my future classroom, I will definitely use problem based learning. Creating lessons that incorporate authentic problems for students to solve is important for motivate and buy-in. Plus, lessons that solve authentic problems can often help students in the affective domain as well.
I think web quests are a great idea in many disciplines, but I can't imagine how I could use them in my dream position, which is teaching elementary art. In my experience, time and technology are very difficult to come by in that situation. However, I think in a well-funded high school, a web quest could be a great way for students to plan a mural or try designing their own buildings.
I think the most important thing to take away from this week's focus on constructivist learning is how vital authentic lessons are. It's so essential to make relevant, true lessons!
